Teaching Philosophy

I am recognized for the high level of respect and inclusion I cultivate in my classrooms. I hold and express a genuine interest in my students’ experiences and ideas of the world. I increase the depth of discussions in the classroom through the interest and respect I hold for my students. These values are infectious, build positive relationships, and foster learning. 

My teaching is motivated by my love for community, equity, the natural environment, technologies, and making positive change. I infuse my courses with knowledge I gain through my engagement in social and environmental issues and projects, the Toronto art community, and with multiple media, especially various photographic practices. My teaching style is organized and yet intuitively delivered. I recognize that clear, confident and engaged teaching is rooted in well-thought-out lesson planning that is contextualized to real-world contemporary issues.

I apply varied sensory-based teaching methods to produce engaging and accessible content. Students’ varied learning styles and paces are accommodated through verbal interactive discussions, sensory explorations of materials and concepts, visual blackboard reinforcement of content, oral guest presentations, hands-on demos and practice sessions, and physical movement during critiques and field trips. I program activities such as gallery tours, guest visits, day trips to inspiring sites, screenings, demos, workshops, and class exhibitions.

In helping my students build critical thinking, knowledge of creative processes, and team skills, with an emphasis on inclusion, equity and decolonization, I engage them with outside organizations and real-world projects. For example, I developed and guided my Experience Design class through a five-week project that manifested into a printed AODA accessibility guide for Green Communities of Canada.

I thrive on mentoring students across media, including photography. Through careful listening, focused questions, and observation of artists’ creative processes, I guide them in their research and creation, through to exhibition. Mentoring involves helping students work through cultural ideas, personal introspection and various techniques.

I also offer leadership, organizational skills, and a passion for disseminating student work. This is demonstrated in my coordination of Activate!, involving the presentation of class projects from seventeen sections of Introduction to Experience Design.
