Weaving by Moonlight

Weaving by Moonlight is a fado (Portuguese blues) and punk inspired video and lacework installation inspired by the hidden queer lives of Portuguese immigrants and their ancestors (family members and poets), as well as the artists’ and their families’ various personal and social transformations. This collaborative work by Teresa Ascencao and Moon Palmar explores transformation and fluidity in immigrants’ journeys through culture, class, labour, and especially gender.

Weaving by Moonlight was the principal work featured in Toronto’s Metro Hall rotunda for the 2023 fall exhibition Perpetual Movements, commemorating 70 years of Portuguese in Canada. The exhibition was organized by Gilberto Fernandes and curated by Rui Pimenta. Videography of the live performance is by Danny Alexander.
